○  The World Heritage Committee will meet in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from September 10th to September 16th, and it is expected that South Korea's Gaya Tumuli will be designated as a World Heritage site around September 17th.

○  The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has determined that the Gaya Tumuli meets the criteria for World Heritage registration and recommended to the World Heritage Committee that it be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The rationale is that it effectively depicts Gaya, which maintained an autonomous and horizontal system that was unique while coexisting with neighboring countries and displays the diversity of ancient civilizations in East Asia.

○  Namwon Yogok-ri and Durak-ri Tumuli's nomination as a World Heritage site is notable because it is located in the northwesternmost interior of the Gaya Confederation and clearly demonstrates the political structure in which it autonomously engaged in discussions with Baekje.

○  The designation of Jeonbuk Gaya as a World Heritage will have direct effects, including instillation of local pride, increased global brand value, a clear rise in local tourism demand, and strengthening of local development competitiveness. Indirect effects will include the creation of local jobs, a rise in production, and creation of added value, and a strategy to maximize these effects is necessary.

○  First, because the area of Jangsu Gaya, including Jangsu Sambong-ri and Dongchon-ri, meets the completeness and authenticity criteria for World Heritage designation, Jeollabuk-do and Jangsu-gun must advocate for the recognition of Jangsu Gaya as a World Heritage site.

○  Second, iron manufacturing ruins that have not yet been unearthed in Gaya's Yeongnam region are concentrated in the cultural heritage site of Jeollabuk-do Gaya, so an iron-themed national museum should be developed.

○  Third, because beacon remnants in Jeollabuk-do's eastern region are widely spread in Muju, Jinan, Wanju, Imsil, and Chungcheongnam-do Geumsan, one of them should be turned into an outdoor Eco Museum.

○  Finally, in order to increase local competitiveness through the implementation of a cultural heritage-centered local revitalization program, the UNESCO Ruritage project should be promoted concurrently with the recognition of Jeollabukdo Gaya as a World Heritage site.
