● Jeonbuk State’s ushering in a new chapter of inland laver cultivation
aInland laver cultivation has been hailed as an eco-friendly and high-value-added model for sustainable fisheries due to its potential to effectively navigate the environmental constraints of marine aquaculture and enable year-round production
aJeonbuk State has recently been designated as a pioneer in transitioning to inland laver cultivation in recognition of its R&D capabilities in this field, coupled with its sustained efforts to overcome the drawbacks of the traditional laver cultivation industry, such as a lack of processing facilities and the leakage of added value.
aDriven by its R&D competencies and technological systems, Jeonbuk State has established itself as a potential hub in the era of inland laver cultivation, laying a solid foundation for spearheading industrialization and strategic roadmaps.
■ Implications of the era of inland laver cultivation
◆ Inland laver cultivation enables the production of high-quality raw laver year-round in a controlled environment, facilitating the forecasting and planning of production and distribution and expanding the development of high-value-added products.
■ Leading strategies in the era of inland laver cultivation
◆ Relevant R&D outcomes should be effectively incorporated into building full-cycle support systems ranging from demonstration to demand-linked management. These outcomes can also be used to develop standardized models and reinforce technology transfer systems.
◆ The following roadmaps should be pursued: 1) establishing a foundation for industrialization by constructing a demonstration complex for the inland laver cultivation industry, operating a start-up campus, and supporting investments, and 2) encouraging private sector participation and promoting start-ups.
■ Proposals for Jeonbuk State’s growth into a hub for inland laver cultivation
◆ A firm R&D commitment has resulted in Jeonbuk-specific inland laver cultivation technologies, which can be developed into a standard K-laver model applicable nationwide. Thus, it is vital for Jeonbuk State to take the initiative in the industrial ecosystem.
◆ Jeonbuk State is also advised to focus on the following action plans: 1) ensure harmonious coexistence with traditional coastal laver farming, and 2) support converted fishermen and promote technology diffusion through a committee dedicated to systematizing the industrialization of K-inland laver cultivation.
